RPC over HTTP/S is a great method for connecting Outlook 2003 client to the corporate Exchange Server 2003 using the Internet or WAN. The Microsoft Windows RPC over HTTP feature allows users to access an Exchange 2003 mailbox without the requirement for a virtual private network (VPN) connection.

The Microsoft Windows RPC over HTTP feature allows you to access an Exchange 2003 mailbox without the requirement for RPC over HTTP/S is a great method for connecting Outlook 2003 client to the corporate Exchange Server 2003 using the Internet or WAN without the need to establish a VPN session. RPC over HTTP/S is especially convenient for remote/laptop users, enables end-users to connect to corporate e-mail (outlook) from work, on the road, or at home.

Note: All client computers that are running Outlook 2003 must be running either Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft® Windows® XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later with the following update: 331320, “Windows XP Patch: RPC Updates Needed for Exchange Server 2003″ Microsoft.com.

To create an Outlook 2003 RPC over HTTP profile, perform the following steps:

1) Click Start, Control Panel, and select Mail.

2) Click the Show Profiles button.

3) Click the Add button.

4) Type a desired profile name and then click OK.

5) Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.

6) Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Next.

7) Within the Microsoft Exchange Server box, type the name of your mail server. In this example, “Exchange01.tset.com” is the name of the mail server.

8) Below the server name. Select the check box “Use Cached Exchange Mode”.

Note: Temporarily turn off Cached Exchange mode to test your configuration. We recommend that you enable Cached Exchange mode after you test your RPC over HTTP configuration.

9) In the User Name box, type your user name. In this example, “testacct1” is the user name.

10) Click the More Settings button.

11) On the Connection tab, in the Exchange over the Internet pane, select the Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP check box.

12) Click the Exchange Proxy Settings button.

a. On the Exchange Proxy Settings page. Enter the FQDN of the RPC proxy server in the Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange box. The RPC proxy server is the Exchange server that users can connect to on the Internet. For example, type email.test.com

b. Select the check box next to Connect using SSL only.

13) Click OK in the Exchange Proxy Settings box, click OK in the Microsoft Exchange Server box, click Next on the E-mail Accounts page, click Finish to close the wizard, and then click OK.

RPC over HTTP approach gives you full MAPI functionality without requiring using a VPN (thus improving client performance and network usage) and without requiring you to put RPC traffic directly on the Internet. The best part is that Outlook supports automatic transition between plain RPC and RPC-over-HTTP. Laptop users can launch Outlook at work, pick up email, take the laptop home, plug it in, and get new email without tweaking any settings.
